Preventing Falls at
Home Linda Slota, Director
Almost half of all falls happen right at home. Follow
these simple tips to make your home safer, preventing dangerous slips and trips:
Clear the Way
Keep walking paths clear of furniture and other
obstacles. Don't leave objects like books, papers, shoes or blankets on the
floor. Make sure wires are secured. If you have loose rugs, remove or secure
them with double-sided sticky tape. Keep objects off the stairs.
Light It Up
Improve lighting in and around your home. Switch from
incandescent to fluorescent bulbs - they are brighter, last longer and cost less
to operate! Place easy-to-reach lamps on both sides of your bed, and a
nightlight between the bedroom and bathroom. Stairways should be well lighted,
with overhead lights that can be switched on at either end.
Keep it in Reach
Store frequently used items on shelves that you can reach
easilty without climbing or reaching high over your head. Never stand on a
chair! if you must, use a stable stool preferably one with a frame you can hold
onto.
Get a
Grip
Install grab bars inside the bthtub and next to the
toilet. Use a non-slip rubber mat or self-stick safety strips on the floor of
the tub or shower. Use a non-slip bathmat or bathroom carpeting outside the tub.
If possible, install handrails on both sides of the stairway.
Keep Your Shoes On
Always wear shoes, both inside and outside the house.
Avoid going barefoot or walking around in socks and slippers that lack a firm,
non-slip sole. If you visit someone who frowns on shoes inside the house, take
along shoes that are reserved for indoor use.
Get Around Safely
Learn where the "Booby-Traps" lurk around your home -
potholes, uneven surfaces, broken pavement and avoid them. And don't be shy
about using a walking aid. |
