Vishing is short for voice phising. It occurs
when you receive a voice mail, email or text message telling you to call your
bank and resolve some sort of dispute. There is a phone number in the message.
You call it and the auto prompts tell you to enter your account umber. BINGO!
You have been vished.
The tax
season and the recession have given rise to several new scams, one of which just
happened in western Massachusetts. A senior reported she had received a phone
call from someone claiming to be from the IRS The seinior was told that she was
entitled to a rebate (tax refund or similar term) from the government and that
they needed her bank account information in order to deposit the money directly
into that account. Fortunately the senior became suspicious and immediately
contacted the AG's office and the local senior center.
NO GOVERNMENT
ENTITY REQUIRES BANK ACCOUNT INFORMATION prior to issuance of payment due a
recipient!
A Boston TV
statio has produced an excellent report on scams (there are several current
variations). The website is http://www.thebosontchannel.com/money/15177933/detail.html.
